Why it works
The walls are the whole point.
A cat asleep in the open keeps part of itself on watch. Give it a contained edge on every side and the animal lets go properly. That is the difference between a bed a cat tolerates and one it returns to on its own.
Coiled, not moulded
One continuous rope wound in a spiral and stitched round by round, which is what gives the wall its stiffness.
A shallow bowl, not a deep box
Low enough that an older cat steps in rather than climbs, high enough that the sides still register as walls.
Cotton, which holds scent
Porous natural fibre takes on the cat's own scent over the first weeks. Synthetic sisal sheds it, which is why some beds never get used.

Undyed cotton rope
Unbleached, so the colour is the cotton's own rather than a dye that can rub off on pale fur. Coiled, never moulded — which is why it springs back instead of staying crushed.
Cotton thread
Every coil stitched to the one below it, the full height of the wall. There is no glue anywhere in this basket, which is what lets the whole thing take water.
Removable cushion
Lifts straight out and goes in the machine at 30°. The part that gets slept on is the part you can wash, which is the whole reason it is not sewn in.
Vegetable-tanned leather
One small tag at the rim, tanned without chrome. It darkens where it gets handled rather than cracking, so it ages in the same direction as the rope.

How it's made
Coiled by hand, one round at a time.
Every part of this basket is doing structural work. That is unusual in a cat bed, where the shape is normally a moulded foam shell with a fabric cover pulled over it — and where a crushed shell stays crushed.
Wound, not pressed
A rope basket is built the way a pot is thrown: one length wound around itself, each round stitched to the last. Nothing is pressed into a mould, so there is no moulded shape to collapse.
The wall is the rope
There is no wire, no board and no foam inside the wall holding it up. The coil holds itself, which is why it can be squashed flat for shipping and come back.
Finished by hand
The rim, the two cat-ear handles, the knot-ball and the tag are each set by hand, so no two baskets are quite identical along the rim.

It does not arrive looking like the photographs, and we would rather say so here than have you open the box and wonder.
DAY 1It arrives flat.
Compressed to ship, so the walls sit low and the rim is an uneven oval. This is the thing buyers are most often surprised by, so we would rather you read it here than discover it on the doormat.
DAY 3The wall comes back.
Left alone in a warm room the coil relaxes and the bowl rounds out by itself. Nothing to steam, stuff or stretch. If it is still leaning after a week, that is a fault and the guarantee covers it.
WEEK 4It starts to smell like her.
Cotton is porous, so scent settles into the fibre instead of sitting on top of it the way it does on synthetics. That is the week most owners say she stopped choosing anywhere else.

Measure your cat curled up, nose to the base of the tail, and add roughly a hand's width. Small suits cats up to about 4 kg, medium up to 8 kg, large up to 10 kg. When a cat falls between two sizes, the smaller one is usually the one it settles in.
It ships compressed to keep the parcel small. The rope is coiled and stitched through every round rather than moulded, so the wall lifts back to shape once it is out of the box. Give it a day to finish opening out.
Lift out the inner cushion and wash that separately. Clean the rope body by spot-cleaning with a damp cloth and mild soap, then let it dry fully in shape. Do not put the rope basket itself in the machine, as that is what breaks the coil.
It might not be. What changes the odds is placement and scent: put it in the room the household already uses rather than a quiet spare corner, and leave something that smells of you or of the cat in it for the first week. Cotton takes on scent in a way synthetic fibre does not, which is usually what makes a bed stick.
The rope is natural cotton with no coating. Cats that habitually eat fabric should be supervised with any woven product, this one included. Occasional scratching at the rim is normal and does not unravel the coil.
Two small cats often will in the large size, but most pairs end up taking turns. If both cats use it daily, a second basket tends to end the standoff faster than a bigger one does.
